The Boston Red Sox are the latest team to sign a stadium deal with a major league baseball team, as the teams have finalized their agreement.
The Red Sox will receive $275 million in funding from MLB to build an $80 million ballpark on land they own in the Fenway neighborhood, according to the Boston Globe.
Boston will host baseball games in 2019 and 2020, and the Sox are currently the only team in Major League Baseball without a stadium in their current city.
The new stadium will also house a team-operated food court, a concession stand, and a restaurant called Fenway House.
The stadium is expected to be ready for Major League Soccer by the end of 2021.
The Red Sox also said in their announcement on Wednesday that they will be partnering with the Boston 2024 campaign to host the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said in a statement on Wednesday, “We are delighted that our city has agreed to build a major new stadium for our citizens in the city’s heart.
Boston 2024 will help build an exciting future for the city and for the sport of baseball in the Boston area.”
The Red Wings are also working with the Red Sox on a new stadium, and owner Ken Holland said on Wednesday he’s in talks with the team on a deal to open a new home in Detroit.
“We are working to get that deal done with the Pistons, who will have to be one of the best sports franchises in the country, and we’ll be doing that in the coming months,” Holland said.
The Detroit Lions also announced plans to open their new home to the public, and it will be called Joe Louis Arena.
Detroit was the last team to open an NHL arena, the Palace of Auburn Hills, in 2006.
The Detroit Red Wings, who have not played in Detroit since 2008, will play at the arena, and Detroit City Councilor Dan Gilbert said he’s “very excited” about the new venue.
“It’s going to be a great building, and I’m very proud to be able to work with Ken and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan on the arena,” Gilbert said.
