Urbanica Construction is using a world-class building site in Urbana to build the first indoor construction company in the U.S.
The company, which is owned by Scott Urban, is building out its downtown Urbanas facility to help with the construction of the new West End MetroLink subway station.
The new space is the largest in the city for construction projects, and the company hopes to have construction underway by fall of 2021.
Construction on the project is scheduled to begin in early 2019, but the company is expecting construction to begin later this year.
The building will be located on a 1.5-acre site at the corner of West Ninth and South Ninth Streets.
Construction on the $15 million project, which will include the addition of a parking garage, will be completed in 2021.
Urbanica hopes to create a manufacturing and logistics facility to allow the company to compete with the likes of Foxconn, a Taiwanese electronics giant.
Construction will take about five years and cost approximately $9.5 million.
It will be the largest indoor construction project in Illinois and the third in the country.
