Urban architect Elardusparks latest project is a brand new residential project in downtown Toronto.
The project is called Urban Domus.
The first phase of the project is now being built, with the completion of the second phase expected in 2019.
It’s called a “largely residential, multi-storey building”, with the residential component in a mix of lowrise and highrise.
The architects behind Urban Domuses are Daniel Leblanc and his brother Daniel Leben.
They say the two brothers have always loved building and designing buildings and that they were attracted to the idea of creating a new structure that would combine both styles.
“When we were younger, we were both architects and we would always try to create the perfect design for each building,” Daniel said.
He said that the brothers were drawn to a vision for an “urban” building that would incorporate the elements of both traditional and contemporary architecture.
“It is a city in which there is an urban form, with a mix between urban and suburban forms, but with a very different form of urban architecture,” he said.
The architects say the building’s design is intended to be as unique as the building itself.
“This is a building that is designed to be more contemporary than any other building in Toronto,” Daniel explained.
“This is something that will stand out from any other residential development in Toronto, or any other commercial project.”
In a video interview with The Urbanist, Daniel said the building will be a mix, “of different forms of architecture, including a lot of modern forms of construction”.
Daniel said that in the beginning, the brothers had hoped to create something that would be a “truly unique and modern urban building”.
The project was born out of a desire to make a unique addition to the skyline.
The Leben brothers decided to use a combination of materials that have been used in residential projects around the world to create their first residential project, Daniel explained, including steel, concrete and glass.
According to Daniel, they wanted to use “modern, high-rise materials” for the first phase, but then to work towards a “modern and contemporary architectural” element later on.
“We wanted to incorporate some of the traditional elements of architecture into this building, but also use contemporary materials, which were very contemporary in Toronto at the time, as well,” he explained.
Daniel said that they wanted the new building to be “very connected to the city”.
“We thought it was important to have a connection between the building and the city,” he added.
To achieve this, the architects created an extensive series of windows and doors, using the glass they created to make the building feel like a windowless, glass-free space.
They also used materials from a number of different sources to create various types of façades, from the walls of a building to the roofs of buildings.
Each of the façade designs included different textures, including brick, wood, stone and stone tile.
There was a sense of “the city”, in the building, Daniel added.
“This building is not going to be just a facade, this is going to become a connection to the streetscape of the city.
The façading, as a result of the glass, the wood and the concrete, will be connected to this building and connected to its surroundings,” he told The Urbanism.
This new project, he said, is a continuation of a theme of his work.
“I always like to combine the different forms and textures in a building,” he remarked.
“And this building is a great example of that.
It is a classic example of how to do that.
The building is completely unique, but it is also very modern.”
Daniel told TheUrbanist that the project will create a “sense of connection to Toronto”.
In terms of the design of the building (as well as the design, materials and design elements), the brothers have already begun working on the exterior, with work on the walls and ceilings already underway.
But Daniel said they were also planning on creating a second phase, with “new design elements” that they are looking forward to seeing.
